Home Schooling Essay -- Teaching Public Education

Home Schooling Education is a very important concern in the hearts of Americans. . But what exactly is the best form of education. Homeschooling has gradually made its way into the education field as an acceptable and controversial form of education. Homeschooling can simply be defined as educating children at home or the community rather than at school (Withrow, 1999; Cromwell, 1998; Lines, 1995). An alternative definition would be, parents choosing the schooling for their children (What is Homeschooling, 2000). Home schooling started thirty years ago because of two men, Raymond Moore and John Holt. Both men felt that the public education system was wrong and emerged as founders of the homeschooling movement in America. Moore believed that children were being pushed in school to learn things they were not ready to learn. After evtensive research, he concluded that children in schools become extremely dependent on their peers. (Lyman, 1998). John Holt believed that it was beneficial to homeschool children because children were not being encouraged to use their natural curiosity. His negative attitude towards schools is shown when he wrote, "To return once more to compulsory school in its barest form, you will surely agree that the government told you that on one hundred and eighty days of the year, for six or more hours a day, you had to be at a particular place, and there do whatever people told you to do, you would feel that this was a gross violation of your civil liberties." Holt viewed schools as places that produced "obedient, but bland citizens" (Lyman, 1998). Home education is one of the fastest growing alternative forms of education to public schooling (Cook, 1999; Withrow, 1999). Approximately one million children or more are being educated in their homes because of the success of homeschooling. (Two Takes on Homeschooling, 1997) The increase of students does not seem to be slowing down, and with growing concern over the public schools, the growth of the homeschooling movement is inevitable. One of the main areas of concern for homeschooling is the academic performance of students; even though there is much debate on the testing assessments and the data collected, research shows that that homeschoolers achieve academically at the same level, or in most cases, above stu... ... automatically. (Kuntz, 2000) Cost Public schools are free. Low-income families can attend without worrying about money, unlike homeschools that have a cost to buy curriculums, materials, and equipment. Also, in homeschooling one family member must give up their income in order to teach their children, and most families can not afford to do that (Szegedy-Maszak). Homeschooling may deprive a child of vital skills needed to succeed outside of high school and in the workforce. In the public schools it is almost guaranteed that a child will get them; whereas homeschoolers most likely will not. The public school system is not perfect, yet it offers a realistic place of education that is available to all with a promise of teachers that have been certified. ? Bibliography: Guterson, D. Cars vs. Motorcycles Essay

There are many people that believe that using a helmet while riding a motorcycle will not help in most crashes. There is no data that supports this it is only a theory. Statistics have no way to predict what would have happened in the same accident under the same conditions if the person would have had a helmet or not. There is no guaranty of safety even with wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle. If you are concerned with safety and comfort than riding in a car is an excellent way to go. Cars have been evolving for thousands of years with safety, comfort and style in mind. Given the information above alone makes riding in a car better than riding a motorcycle because a car is safer, quieter, and more comfortable than a motorcycle. Statistics show that 84 of drivers drive a car rather than a motorcycle. There are many features in cars that make them safe. Some of these features would be that they are made of metal. The metal that the car is made of keeps individuals inside the vehicle safe from being hit directly in an accident. For instance, the Hummer is one the safest vehicles out there. It originated from the Hum-Vee which is used as a military vehicle. The Hummer frame is the strongest in the car industry. A car has seatbelts that also keep you safe. When the seatbelt is buckled, it holds a person into the seat so that in the event of an accident the person is kept safe and inside the car. A seatbelt has a three point safety-belt restraint system that focuses on the shoulders, hip and lap. This protects the bodys internal organs and controls the bodys forward motion during a crash. It also prevents cranial and cervical injuries by minimizing head and neck motion. For example, in Colorado of August 2013 there was a 7 year old boy that was killed in a crash off of highway 119. He was in the cargo area of a 1996 Ford Explorer and was partially ejected during the rollover accident due to him not wearing his seatbelt. Another feature that cars have to keep you safe is the airbag. Airbags are passive restraints designed to activate automatically when a vehicle gets into an accident. For example, all new vehicles in the United States have to include dual front airbags, but many automakers go above and beyond that minimum requirement such as Toyota. In addition to the car being safe, it is also quiet. What makes a car quiet is that it has doors. A vehicle door can be opened to provide access to the opening, or closed to secure it. These doors can be opened manually, or powered electronically. Doors when shut keep out noise and weather conditions such as wind, rain and heat. In addition, the Cadillac has won the Motor Trends Car of the Year for the last five years due to the exterior design of their doors. The suction that the Cadillac doors provide keeps out 98 of all noise and air, as well as 100 of all weather conditions. Windows also help keep a car quiet. Car windows have a seal that keeps out wind and noise from the outside when rolled up. When rolled down the windows allow air to flow throughout the vehicle. For example, my daughter and I were taking a trip to Pismo, and we had the windows down to enjoy the breeze, but the wind was so loud we couldnt hear each other and had to roll them up. It was so quiet and peaceful after rolling up the windows. A car is also comfortable along with being safe and quiet. Cars have seats with backs as well as temperature control. The back of the seats in a vehicle can lean back keeping it comfortable and making it an enjoyable ride. Vehicles also have a system to blow heat or air conditioning into the car to keep the individuals inside the car comfortable. For instance, the BMW has very comfortable seats. If leaned back it feels like a recliner chair. The air control in the BMW has several settings to keep the driver and passengers comfortable. Riding in a car is safe, quiet and comfortable, unlike riding on a motorcycle. For instance, riding a motorcycle is more dangerous than a car because motorcycles are hard to see on the road and are easily hit. Due to the size of motorcycles there is more of a blind spot than that of a car that makes it easy for them to be hit by other drivers on the road. For example, there is a lady and her husband just last week that were going on a ride to Bass Lake on their motorcycle. They were in their lane on the freeway, and a car didnt see them because they were in the cars blind spot, and they were hit. Tanya suffered from a fractured shoulder and Justin needed surgery for his broken back. Banning motorcycles would cut the accidents on the road by half of what they are now. Motorcycles are also dangerous because riders can easily fall off. Motorcycles only have two wheels, one in the front and one in the back. There is nothing to hold the rider onto the bike. For instance, 64 of all motorcycle accidents are due to the rider falling off their 1 / 2 bikes. Riders tend to not hold onto the bike as well as they should. If motorcycles were banned the cost of vehicle insurance and medical expenses would decrease considerably. Not only is a motorcycle more dangerous than a car, it is quieter too. Unlike the car that is quiet inside because of the doors and windows, a motorcycle is loud because there is no barrier to outside wind. While riding the wind blowing against the rider is very loud. For example, in 1972 there were 14,000 cases of riders having ear infections and hearing loss due to the wind blowing in their ears while riding. The amount of people with hearing issues would go from 74 to 30 if we did not have individuals riding on motorcycles. A car has comfortable options whereas riding a motorcycle is very uncomfortable. When you are riding a bike, and you go over bumps it hurts. Motorcycles are designed with only a little cushion for the rider to straddle so that they do not become too comfortable and lose focus. When going over bumps in the road the rider feels it in-between their legs. For example, a biker, James Casotle quit riding motorcycles in 1997 for this reason alone. He was so uncomfortable and in pain after getting off his motorcycle he would have a hard time walking. Years of this caused him to have permanent damage to his tailbone. Not only do the bumps in the road cause discomfort so do insects. While riding motorcycles, insects flying around can fly into the riders mouth or eyes. For instance, there is motorcycle insurance commercial, and it shows a rider on the highway. As the guy is riding a swarm of insects fly into him. The bugs fly into his mouth and eyes causing him to crash. Banning motorcycles would result in fewer accidents and medical issues. If motorcycles were banned from the United States, we would have a decrease in taxes since there would not be such a high demand for certain medical issues. We would have safer roads since driving a motorcycle is dangerous for those driving cars and the motorcyclist. There are billboards reminding drivers to check twice for motorcycles, but they are still difficult to see and some drive between vehicles. Heroes in the Writing of George Orwell Can a hero still be a hero although he succumbs to his weakness? What if he becomes the very thing he was against or want to eradicate? In our modern world, we find many examples of heroes in stories, movies, and even the news that usually have a positive connotation related to them, and many of their story arcs usually have a positive resolution, similar to the classic romantic stories long ago. Winston â€Å"was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle† and â€Å"went slowly† because of his frail deposition (Orwell, ch. 1). Orwell begins the novel describing Smith’s weaknesses, like his older age and his health problems. These details quickly clash against what Smith is about to do, something that is punishable by the thought police. A problematic situation in my current organization that is rooted in employee motivation and attitudes is the lack of satisfaction group members consistently feel. In this problem defined, decision making led to a negative effect as employees started to communicate their displeasure to supervisors and to one another. The disapproval and lack of buy-in into new ideas from leaders developed divisions within the organization. The executive director was quite aware of the impact his decisions were making and personally accepted responsibility for this set of unique circumstances. Though, there was no immediate action that could remedy the situation until the end of the fiscal year. Privately, he discussed his personal frustration to me in regard to past decisions that eventually led staff to be unhappy and ultimately hindered the culture. They are frequently referred to as the greatest band of all time. But were they really? In this paper, I will compare and contrast two conflicting opinions on The Beatles: Howard Goodall’s documentary â€Å"20th Century Greats: The Beatles† and Piero Scaruffi’s written criticism on the band. I began reading Scaruffi’s web-based criticism, and despite being fore-warned of his unpleasant disposition, found its cynical and loathsome attitude to be unpleasant to read. Throughout the entire piece of writing, Scaruffi never ceased his constant verbal attack on The Fab Four, mercilessly calling them mediocre and generally uncreative musicians. He numerously accuses them of shameless imitation of other groups. He makes it very clear that he only believes The Beatles achieved their colossal fame due to extreme luck and just being at the right place at the right time. They arrived just as the white middle class were beginning to feel untrustworthy of the African-American-influenced Rock and Roll. They emerged out of nowhere with a polished and tamer version, stripped of it’s black roots that was more appealing and erased the idea it was a bad influence on the youth of the time. Scaruffi doesn’t believe The Beatles to be as world-shatteringly revolutionary as every single other person on the face of planet Earth does, bluntly stating that â€Å"Their music was just easy to sell to the masses†¦ nd they were photogenic†. Scaruffi credits their immense success not to musical ability, but to the fact that they were sellable, appealed to a broad audience, and had an infinitely accomplished producer. Scaruffi knows that George Martin was acutely influential on The Beatles musical choices and techniques. He gets this right, although is cruel in his implied beliefs that none of the Beatles themselves contributed a single thing. I believe that he is unfair stating generally that The Beatles are ntalented and unoriginal. I believe this could maybe be applied to the shallow, simple music they were creating early in their career, but to say that overall they didn’t contribute anything at all wonderful is untrue. Over the short decade, they created, experimented and expanded so much that it is practically unfathomable. He does, however, offer slight praise of some elements of their later works such as Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and rightfully so. After Scaruffi’s dismal, cutting composition, I warmly welcomed Howard Goodall’s Documentary â€Å"20th Century Greats: The Beatles†. I expected a much more adoring view that would better match my own opinions and that would generally be pleasant to watch. I was sadly mistaken. First of all, Goodall insists on singing the songs himself and only occasionally plays the original recording, which was unimaginably irritating to me, at least. And not only was Goodall incessantly annoying as a narrator, he blindly worships The Beatles while offering useless information. The entire documentary describes in minute detail about the musical techniques that The Fab Four used to revolutionize music, when really they had no idea they were even using them as they were writing the songs. The only person who would’ve had an idea they were using these fancy tactics accidentally would be George Martin. I did not hear Goodall mention George Martin once†¦ and if he had, it must have been in passing. The only thing that Goodall got exactly right was the fact that they were brilliant at translating their feelings into music while virtually having no idea what they were doing musically, and that they did, indeed, change music forever. My own personal opinion, I think, would be somewhere in the exact middle between these two polar opposites. I love the music that The Beatles have created and think they were just spectacularly wonderful, but I also am able to recognize that a large percent of their brilliance was also contributed by George Martin and I accept that. I think the most impressive thing about The Beatles as a musical group is how much they accomplished. In just 10 years, they created so much. The monstrous amount of material the created is staggering. And all while experimenting, re-inventing techniques and making them their own, growing, learning, changing and finding themselves within the music is just mind-blowing and inspiring. This future describes a world where science and technology have been allowed to progress unchecked. There are no moral or spiritual obligations and the good of society is placed above individuality and freedom. Lenina Crown is a perfect example of this society and all that it represents. Lenina Crown is a model example of how unchecked technology can destroy humanity. If you allow every desire to be satisfied with no work or effort it teaches people that they are entitled to privileges and should not have to work for them. With only physical wants considered the moral, emotional, and spiritual aspects of society are eliminated, leaving only pleasure as a deciding factor. The lack of care for resources is shown with the hypnopaedic phrase of Ending is better than mending. This along with, Every one belongs to every one else capture the spirit of the New World perfectly. There is nothing needed except pleasure and instant gratification to factor into a decision. If you allow science and technology to be your god and savior it is proof of a decaying society. If progress becomes more important than spirituality you begin to lose your soul, the very part of you that makes you human. Leninas complete lack of knowledge of God, religion, and faith show that even though there is little suffering in the New World, there is no real joy or happiness. True happiness can only come from faith and without it there can only be a mediocre existence. Lenina can not understand Johns religion, the Indians beliefs or anything that resembles faith. This is because the New World discourages anything but the present and physical pleasure. This keeps the citizens happy only because they have never experience true emotion. For all her beauty and brains, Lenina lacks one of the corner stones of a normal society, morals. She is not a bad person but does not have any set of guidelines to live by. The Solidaity Services with Orgy-Porgy and the belief that, Promiscuity is a citizens duty are meant to promote group pleasure and social stability, sacrificing the individuals morals and personal beliefs. Without these beliefs people are not individuals but programmed robots who do what they are told is best for them. To leave science and technology to progress without regulation is to open the door to the decline of humanity. Everything is done according to what is best for the entire society as dictated by the World Controllers. With no emotions, pain, joy, morals, or spirituality to say what is right or wrong technology continues on into areas where self-control and restraint are needed but none is used. With nothing to guide science, only chaos and death can come in the end.
